It is with a very heavy heart that I write this review. I am extremely disappointed in Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens. My best friend and I went there today to hike. The gardens are well looked after and it was clean. All our problems started when we tried to leave - we could not. Yes, you read that right. The car watch blocked my friend from leaving the premises and spoke to her in an utter disgusting tone. She asked him whether the parking was not free and he said yes but she had to pay him. He forced her to pay him R50 before she could leave. She was visibly shaken and was shocked by his hostility and aggression through her car window. That man can thank his stars that he interacted with a person who does not engage in conflict. Be warned, that man will meet his match with someone who is not as kind :)

The "Neat Marketing" company website promises - "Holiday Spirit Abounds as you wander through Christmas Town, you'll be immersed in a world of festive decorations, and the warmth of fellow revelers (spelt wrong) sharing in the joy of the season. It's a place where the magic of Christmas is alive in every corner. Join us at Christmas Town and create treasured memories with your loved ones. Come one, come all, and experience the wonder of the holidays in a way that will leave your heart aglow with the spirit of Christmas. Don't miss this chance to make your holiday season truly unforgettable! Sorry to spoil the Christmas cheer - but how wrong could you get it guys? Two years ago we attended the "Festival of Lights" at Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens - it was spectacular, well organised, clean, with good facilities, lots of people, lots of Christmas lights etc - a memorable evening indeed. Based on that "feel good" memory - this year my wife and I took our 3 x grandkids - R500 entrance (no pensioners discount). Surprised at the few cars in the carpark - one's immediate thoughts were that it was a reflection of good South African folk just struggling to make ends meet in this tough economy - however an hour later I changed my mind about the empty car park and put the reasons rather to something more tangible - like just a not well organised event that was turning folk away - or leaving early. I felt for the stall owners and car guards who had their own opinion of this event that echoed my thoughts exactly - or for the couple leaving at the same time as us with their baby, grumbling about the waste of money - also expecting what they remembered from 2 years earlier. Without going into morbid detail - they just got the simple basics wrong. Like the lack of Christmas lights - only a very few, rather tragically lonely ones, scattered about 100 metres apart, one dustbin to service a huge area and the reason for the amount of ******* left lying around, warm cooldrinks, smelly toilets, terrible PA system and some young staff doing a pretty sad job of entertaining a handful of kids. My impression was that the whole event was under budgeted and the organisers were hoping no one would notice. I have given one star for the event but have given two more stars just because the natural beauty of the botanical gardens makes up for it. My sincere thanks to the kind security person who tried to help me find a dustbin to throw my picnic left overs in, and who actually took it to the bin for me when they saw how far away it was - really appreciated! Hopefully lessons have been learnt and that next year it is more successful than this year - although that should not be too difficult to achieve.

False advertising for a Market in 5 Mar 2023. There were less than 10 stalls and they sold things that wasn't worth buying or looking at. The place was morbid - you could feel the boredom as soon as your R70 ticket was scanned and you entered. The few stalls were strategically places at the entrance and on a winding path to camouflage the fact that the market was a failure (more like a disaster). The HONEST thing to do would've been to advertise that there were few stalls or cancel the event It as a waste of R70, in fact it is paramount to robbery! The restaurant should be shut down. They don't tell you that they don't have stock of certain foods until after you order and receive your drinks. Each time the waiter passed by he stopped to tell us what was the latest item they didn't have stock. It was easier to count the items they had stock of on one hand! Apart from stealing R70pp, people had to starve! PATHETIC

I visited the Restaurant at Walter Sisulu Botanical Gerden today with my son and a friend. It was such a horrible experience... The waiter that assisted me was rude and unprofessional and scary to say the least... I wobt ever sit my foot there again and i will most certainly ensure that my whole family necer ever visit it again even though it was a weekly occurance for us... He even #ood on the deck and shouted at me to cobfirm my order as he disnt writw it down after i repeated it to him at my table thrice.... When i apoje to the manager Michael he apologised and obviously spoje to the qaiter as the waiter come back to my table and i was scared to say the least womam alone and the wya that he came to supposidly apoligised certainly did not feel like an apology he just yet again spoke to me in such an attide with an high pitched voice i felt like he shouted at me i told him 4 times to just leave it it is fine and he still continued to say i dis not shout at you... i was scared...

The whole family used to enjoy visiting the Walter Sisulu National Gardens. It is definitely a great place to relax, read a book or let the kids run freely. There is ample free parking, although not very wheel chair accessible, it's a bit hilly, only one play area with wooden swings which is close to the parking lot and is not fenced off. The problems begin with too many monkeys which may spoil a picnic if they can. Also, many areas of the park have been neglected which is sad and disappointing. The ponds have dirt in them, hedges and bushes are overgrown or ripped out and left aside and litter is accumulated at certain spots around the park which is not picked up. Overall there is poor maintainance of the park. Apart from these drawbacks, you can still find a peaceful spot on the park with the perfect blend of shade and sunshine . Hopefully they will improve the maintenance levels of the park.
