A while back, I visited Dunkeld Country Estate with my partner for what was our engagement weekend. We had stayed there a couple of years ago and loved it - so seemed like a great place to go back to. When we had arrived at the hotel - there were four staff members sitting outside our door to the point where my partner and to walk around them to get to our room after which they continued to sit there and chat. We booked into the hotel and I must say - the rooms were atrocious. It looked like it hadn't been cleaned properly in weeks. The sheets were old and worn (we had asked for them to be changed twice before they finally did). The DStv decoder (which also wasn't working and no one came after I phoned reception to ask to have it fixed) was hanging from the TV with wires everywhere. The walls in the bathroom were so caked with dirt - there was a visible line when you wiped your finger against it. Every single dish in the restaurant at breakfast was badly chipped (which is a health hazard) and the service in the restaurant also not great. What should've been the weekend of our lives was extremely soured by our experience at Dunkeld. Upon checking out we asked to speak to a manager to which he was apparently too busy in the backroom. There was a clear lack of management the whole weekend. Guests in your hotel should at the very least get a clean room. I am disgusted at our experience and will definitely not be returning ever again. I recommend everybody to do the same. I have attached some pictures which basically summarise everything I have to say.

Most terrible place to stay for your money. At R2200.00 per night for 4 sleeper self catering with no hand soap, shower gel, pan to cook in, rusted grill, broken curtains, broken stove, no TV either SABC or DSTV, no proper pots to cook in, no hot placemats or pot holders, nothing. But they take your money and upfront within 24 hours to book. New housekeeping management don't do anything and nowhere to be seen, owners don't care. Don't waste your money coming here. They charge 5 Star prices but the place is a dump. No hand towels even to dry your hands and when you ask you given broken stained towels, it is a pathetic place. I'd rather pay same price at 4 star or 5 star anywhere else than come here for what? How owners get away with it is beyond me and ludicrous. Someone needs to do something. Stay away.

Check-in time is only at 16:00,when the industry standard is 14:00. We requested late check-out for 11:00 due to the late check-in time and it was approved by the receiptionest. The next morning the person on duty calls us at 10:00 and requests us to check-out. Yet we had the late check-out. We were rushed and couldn't enjoy our morning. Very dissapointed as we had people from North West that joined us for the trip!!

Our stay was extremely disappointing from start to finish. We arrived at 14:30 after confirming beforehand that early check-in might be possible if the room was available. The hotel’s official check-in time is already late at 16:00, yet even then the room was still not ready due to housekeeping delays. We were also unexpectedly required to pay a conservation fee on arrival, which was not communicated beforehand and only appears in the fine print of the terms and conditions. When we finally received the room at around 16:30, it was still absolutely filthy. There were skid marks in the toilet, mucous and stains in the bathtub, hair on the bedding, and stains on the furniture and bed throw. This was completely unacceptable and raised serious hygiene concerns. Staff response throughout was poor. Reception could not explain the delays, one staff member was rude and unhelpful, and the manager on duty showed little urgency or apology. The cleaning staff were also rude and made minimal effort to clean properly, requiring us to request cleaning products ourselves. Adding to this, the flooring is old and rotten. There are bugs breeding underneath the unit because of the moisture. They were EVERYWHERE in the unit. We could not sleep at all due to bugs crawling on the bed, resulting in us calling the after hours management at 2a.m. They took 30 minutes to show up to the property only to tell us there’s no rooms available, we would have to just stay in the room. The water had also stopped working the following morning. We could not shower, brush our teeth or flush the toilet. No reason ,apology or solution for this has been provided. Booked somewhere else as this was completely unacceptable. No accountability, apology or refund from management. Don’t book here, don’t waste hard earned your money. This experience completely ruined the start of our holiday. It was our first and last stay here — we would not recommend this property to anyone. If I could give this place a zero rating I would.

I stayed at Dunkeld Country & Equestrian Estate for my birthday trip with a few of my girlfriends from 23 November to 26 November 2025. We were originally put in unit 30 on the equestrian estate but we ended up moving to unit 2. The day we arrived I phoned reception asking for the sleeper couch to be set up which I had phoned to be set up prior to our arrival. We went for a walk around the estate and came back to find the mattress for the sleeper couch just dumped outside the house with no sheets, no duvet and no pillows. I had also asked for extra towels multiple times which I only received after we moved units. On our second day we came back from town when it was raining to find the lightbulb in the master bedroom pouring with water. The carpet in the room was soaked and most of our clothes were wet. We asked to move as the house was leaking in multiple places through the walls and other lights. I then phoned reception and they kept cutting me off and dismissing my concerns, and were almost taken aback when I asked to move units. Eventually they accepted and moved us to unit 2 where we then lost power for the remainder of our trip. Although they couldn’t fix the power themselves, we were never offered some sort of compensation as we could not cook or bath and shower and were not offered an alternative power source. It would have been nice of the estate to provide some candles and extra firewood so we could atleast see what we were doing. Overall our stay was not 4 stars to say the least and I will not book a trip there in the near future. Even though they claim to be a 4 star venue, I was incredibly disappointed.

I am writing this complaint to warn other South African families and travelers about the dishonest and ********* practices I experienced when booking a weekend away through Booking.com, handled by Touch Down Africa, and hosted at Dunkeld Country Estate in Dullstroom. What was promised: A peaceful, family-friendly unit with a bath, putt-putt course, and cozy amenities Clear and honest photos of the actual unit being booked A smooth booking experience with trusted agents and reputable platforms What actually happened: The unit had no bath, despite booking based on photos that clearly showed one There was no upstairs toilet, despite travelling with a pregnant wife and 18-month-old baby The bedrooms had no heaters, and the unit was ice cold (no safety screen on the fireplace, either) The listing used 72 generic photos, pulling from various units and amenities — highly misleading We were subjected to delay tactics, emotional pressure, and no meaningful support from: Touch Down Africa, the so-called “agent” — refused to take responsibility Dunkeld reception, who were polite but simply passed the buck Booking.com, whose platform continues to host confusing, bundled listings with no unit-specific clarity Instead of support, we got: Endless back-and-forth phone calls Empty promises of "looking into it" Pressure to make a rushed decision (“we’re filling up, you must act now”) A cold shoulder when asking for a reasonable refund or cancellation We had no choice but to leave the premises and scramble for new accommodation — food, medication, a heater, and calm for our child. Our wedding anniversary weekend was completely derailed. My warning to others: Do NOT trust the photos on Touch Down Africa's listings — they combine images from various units to make everything look better Do NOT expect Booking.com to protect you — their system favors the agent and host Do NOT assume Dunkeld Country Estate will assist — they’ll refer you back to the agent, leaving you stranded There’s a pattern here: mislead the customer, deflect accountability, then pressure them into paying more or settling. What I want: I am pursuing a full refund and I’m sharing this story to protect others from being exploited by this trio of companies. Until this is resolved, I will continue escalating across consumer platforms, social media, and review sites.

Unless the meaning of the word has changed, this is a gross misrepresentation. An Estate it is not. After looking forward to visiting Dunkeld for a long time and after what I experienced throughout my recent visit, the only thing I am glad about is that I will never visit this so-called Estate again. I found it very difficult to summarise this unfortunate list any more, so please bear with me and believe me it pains me as I also once loved this place. Dishes that seem to have never been washed, thick yellow grime, disgusting! Miss matched dishes, furniture, tiles. Missing freezer drawers, the one that is there is broken. Missing tiles, missing light bulbs(VERY DANGEROUS), lose electrical appliances with exposed wiring(VERY DANGEROUS) Filthy, the whole place was just dirty. Water damage in just about every room. Door handles are broken and doors don't close properly. And surprisingly don't open cleanly either, bang into the pathetic “dresser table” or the toilet, it's a joke really. Hanging shelves, closets that arent deep enough for the coat hanger in them. The mountain bike trail is not maintained as they assured me it was. Fallen trees, yes multiple, not marked clearly, and broken crossing bridges (VERY DANGEROUS). The vista outlook is so battered some railings and floor boards are non-existent. The entertainment area comes across more as a staff hangout than anything. As early as 8am some days blaring FILTHY language music, including reception, and throughout the day ensuring that the game just don't wander near that quadrant of the resort. Harsh or nitpicky it may seem, the extensive investment it takes to visit a place like this and considering how they advertise themself I can assure you I am unable to put in words how disappointed I am with everything I experienced here.

I recently stayed at this estate, and it was a complete letdown. The management was terrible. Communication was practically non-existent, and I received no response when I tried to reach out for assistance. It was incredibly frustrating, especially when you’re hoping for a relaxing getaway. As for cleanliness, it was worse than I expected. The house was dirty, and there were stains on the furniture and bedding. The floors hadn’t been swept, and the bathrooms were not properly cleaned. It felt like no effort was put into maintaining the property, and it was incredibly off-putting. Overall, the lack of proper management and poor cleanliness completely ruined our stay. It’s a shame because the location had potential, but I can’t overlook the basic level of service and cleanliness that was missing. I would not recommend staying here unless they seriously improve these areas. Manager: 0665666538
