To Whom It May Concern, On the 6th of July 2025, around 2:00 PM, I discovered that my MTN number had been hacked. The hackers gained access to my WhatsApp and began sending messages to my contacts, pretending to be me and asking for money under false pretenses. I immediately contacted MTN customer care, urgently requesting that the number be suspended or blocked to prevent further *****. However, I was told that MTN could not assist because a SIM swap had already been done by the hacker, and that I had to visit a physical store for help. Minutes later that day, I visited the MTN store at Cape Gate Mall, Cape Town, where I was assisted by Kealynne. He explained that the only way to recover access was to do another SIM swap, as the OTPs needed for WhatsApp verification were being sent to the hacker. I provided all required documents: my ID, proof of address, and the old SIM card. I also purchased a new SIM card as instructed. I was told not to insert the new SIM and wait 24 to 48 hours for the SIM swap to take effect. After 48 hours, nothing had changed. I contacted the store and spoke to Dianah, who said the SIM swap was being denied because the hacker was refusing authorisation. This confused me, as no authorisation was requested from me during the hacker’s original SIM swap. It made no sense that MTN would require consent from the hacker—someone committing a ******** act—to reverse a *****ulently executed SIM swap. Dianah admitted this wasn’t the first time something like this had happened and promised to escalate the issue to the technical department, who could allegedly bypass the hacker’s authorisation. She told me it would be resolved in 3–4 hours and gave me the store number (083 869 1413) as I was flying abroad for work. Unfortunately, after the promised 4 hours, nothing had changed. We called again, and Dianah repeated that the hacker refused authorisation. I asked if there was any way to suspend or block the number to stop the abuse. Again, we were told this depends on the hacker accepting the authorisation—which is completely illogical and disturbing from a security and legal standpoint. Since I had to travel, I asked if my wife could follow up on my behalf in the store, and this was agreed upon. On 9 July, I emailed mtncustomercare, and a reply from Thato requested the 10-digit numbers on the SIM card. I immediately sent both the old and new SIM card numbers, but received no further response. I also emailed MTN ***** Queries—again, no reply to date. I then called MTN Head Office, where I was transferred to technical support, but was told the SIM numbers were invalid, which they are not. When I asked to speak to a manager, the call was abruptly dropped. On another attempt, I was told that technical support is not available by phone. On 10 July, the store again said the hacker was refusing authorisation. My wife spoke to the store manager, Melissa, who promised to escalate the matter. On 11 July, Melissa asked if I had submitted an affidavit—something I had never been asked to do up to that point. I told her I had provided all relevant documents and proof: my ID, proof of address, SIM details, and emails. They know I am outside the country and I can not do an affidavit. Yet still, my number remains hijacked, my WhatsApp is under the control of a ********, and I never gave consent for the initial SIM swap. Despite doing everything MTN asked—store visits, document submissions, follow-ups, escalations, emails—nothing has been resolved. It has now been 6 days with no solution, no action, and no urgency from MTN to suspend, block, or recover my number. 📢 I am demanding the following: 1. Immediate suspension or recovery of my mobile number. 2. A full investigation into how a *****ulent SIM swap was authorised without my consent. 3. An explanation as to why MTN is requiring a ********’s authorisation to reverse a *****. 4. A formal apology and accountability from MTN for the complete failure in handling this security breach.
