Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital
Based on recent customer reviews, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital evokes deeply divided sentiment. Patients consistently praise specific wards, doctors and nursing teams for life-saving interventions, compassionate ICU care, and Ubuntu-driven service, with the dental clinic and certain paediatric wards earning particular admiration. However, a recurring theme is distress around access to care, including denied emergency assistance, postponed surgeries blamed on funding, missing patient files, dispensary stockouts, and allegations of negligence and rude conduct. Experiences appear highly dependent on which department, ward or staff member a patient encounters.

In humane, no remorse and barbaric treatment to say the least. I came in just before 12pm Tuesday afternoon 19th May 2026 , I was rushed in with a severe 3 week headache as a cancer patient. The Dr in Triage bluntly told me your cancer is now on your brain. Go to window 2, open a file and go through that door to see if they can tell you what to do. The door I was sent into was the Polyclinic. This is where I was seen by emergency Drs, radiologist, nurses, and oncologist. They all told me this is an urgent matter and I need to be admitted immediately inorder to map a way forward and start treatment. We'll I would also imagine so because this is literally a time line between life and death (this is not the first time this hospital has left me risking the cancer spread because of making me wait). Wait on that plastic chair they said we will book your bed and get you sorted A.S.A.P. I been sitting on said small hard plastic chair for over 17 hours, with no sleep on strong pain medication to mask my pain, with no answers or further responses. My body is tense and my brain is tired but I cannot sleep because im seated in a small hard plastic chair. From early afternoon to sunrise the next day! Not allowed to move! Not allowed to speak up! Not allowed to question the smells and coughing next to me, even though my condition makes me nauseous and leaves me with an immune system that cannot fight back, not one of the staff even took into consideration that hey we cannot keep a cancer patient awake for 24 hours straight. Keep in mind, I'm a tax payer, been one for 17 years, and yet I pay as I earn at Charlotte Maxeke, not only that but I have to go to Donald Gorden Private hospital to spend 10s of thousands of rands to purchase my breast cancer treatment privately to bring it to Charlotte Maxeke for them to administer. Is this humane? Is this how sick and vulnerable is supposed to be treated? I have witnessed many others being neglected and even some being rolled out on a stretcher with a green canopy never to see the light of day again. In all honesty facing this hospital has become worse than facing cancer itself. Where's all the cancer advocates? I see many non profit organizations raking in donations blowing up balloons and doing cancer conferences at Charlotte Maxeke, singing Charlotte Maxekes praises, yet the same people they are advocating for is being ill treated and left for dead on the same grounds they celebrating!!! I have complained to the board on so many Seperate occasions, now my question is as a cancer patient am I really going to have to complain about every ward I enter? Every emergency admittance I end up in? Every clinic visit? Literally everytime there's an issue!

My brother is currently there for the past 2weeks in the blue section. Besides the fact that the doctor's dont tell you anything, the nurses and staff just dont care about doing their jobs. He has gone worse since being admitted and must wear a nappy that they dont clean or anything until we are there. He has developed bed scores now. He cannot even lift his arm so weak he is and they dont help feed him or nothing. The little we leave him, gets ****** and he is to weak to fight back. Where can I reach someone senior to assist or should I just go to the news.....

I am so angry , I have been taking my housekeeper who has been with me for over 30 years to CMJAH since June 2025 , they found a tumor that was blocking her esophagus preventing her from eating and drinking. A stent was inserted and a biopsy done in July 25 , no results until Dec 2025 - inconclusive another biopsy was done in Jan 2026 . By this time the tumor had descended into her stomach. Had a clinic visit today 11/02/2026 , another biopsy must be done ( 3rd ) because they still cannot give a definitive diagnosis. Dr says it looks like it could be cancer but we canβt be sure.On top of everything the file is empty , all previous notes and results were missing from her file , I was puzzled as to why the doctor asked her what was wrong and why she needed to see a doctor. The doctor even asked me what medications she needed to prescribe ??!!! Meanwhile she is wasting away before my eyes , at last check she was 35kg , a grown woman. My arms are thicker than her legs. She is in pain , vomits if she tries to eat something solid like bread. This is just unacceptable.

Good day, it's sad and very upsetting that at ER my husband was in there and he has been waiting for very long and has been that on having a thyroid that is extensively massive and huge and not functioning at all the complications he has is: (dizziness, not eating (losing 30kg in two months), been weak, not been able to talk correctly, affecting the ears, on earache, not breathing properly (life threatening) as his thyroid is obstructing and pushing down on the oesaohagus and him grasping for air) it's so not right that an operation can't be done as to the hospital been to booked up and there been no beds, why can't any hod or upper authority help on an emergency operation and just allowing my husband to have help and to have a normal life, his been told by ER that he has to come only in January next year (but still no date has been set), but what is his way on living the way he has with serious complications on his life it's so not correct, nobody even in the ER the doctors or nobody speaks or explains anything on his life or how he can manage with this at any means or ways as he is battling to grasp air at many measures, please this is not right or fair on the health board for this gentleman my husband to not receive an emergency procedure to make his life and matters a lot easier, he is needing an operation immediately and if somebody or hod or upper authority help as this is a serious matter in need, this is serious and he needs an operation ASAP, is there anybody that can assist him

Too often it happens that certain medications or items, like diabetes test strips are not available at the dispensary. It will be said it's not available or out of stock. For a hospital dispensary, this is unacceptable.

I took a baby there last year, who had pneumonia and upon arrival the helpful and caring staff diagnosed her with other critical illness and eventually passed on. But the overall support from nurses at Ward 285-287 the Children's department was amazing and very remarkable centered in Ubuntu. Driven by a passion to change life and heal one soul at a time no matter the circumstance. Because throughout Fiona Dube's stay at the hospital they made the whole stay journey very pleasant for my daughter and her mom. Big up to the nurses at Ward 285-287, doctors and they supervisors they even deserve an award for their dedication to their work.
