I have had a couple of months to calm down about this and now I am ready to start letting people know what a Used Approved BMW badge is actually worth.

This a letter (a combination of two or three letters) I wrote to BMW Fors****s and the customer care department after having to pay a R 30 000.00 bill for an engine rebuild after 7 months and only 5000kms.

Dear Sir,

I have owned 11 BMWs of which three have been Used Approved, and until now I believed it came with a stamp of approval from BMW. So much so I bought this car unseen.
I am sending you this email regarding the BMW 320i E90 that I bought from you in September last year.

I recently began getting some engine noises, so I took it to Mouton Motors who is our local aftermarket BMW specialist (well respected by Lynn Schroeder BMW).
He has had to split the motor as the engine has shot the bearings. It needs a new con rods and bearings among other parts,at massive expense to me.

The reason I am emailing you is:

1. Mouton Motors tell me that the oil in the engine was so thick and gritty that is what caused the damage.
2. The Vehicle showed 9000kms to service when I received it and I asked if it should have been serviced as part of the sale procedure and was told it was not necessary.
3. I believe that you guys do a 100 point test to check the vehicle is in great shape, yet no one looked at the condition of the oil?

There is no way that 5000kms is going to destroy the quality of this oil to the point it was at.
I had no warning lights of low oil … the oil level did not get low.
Truth is the damage was already done long before I bought the vehicle.

I am extremely disappointed that I have bought a quality car from a quality company and because of poor pre-sales checks, I have inherited a huge problem.

Regards,

Stuart Marshall.

I had a very helpful response from Nick Curry at BMW Tyger Valley. But in the end he could not make anything happen. Maybe it was just Fors****s BMW (who have now changed hands) that were incompetent.
But the response from BMW Customer Care was pathetic:

From: ********** ********** />Sent: Friday, 26 May 2017 8:03 AM
To: ********** />Subject: Cust Service Case: ********** 294, Engine Seized / SMG Tygervalley

Good day Mr Marshall

Upon liaising with the dealership and being provided with the feedback from the dealership, BMW SA can confirm the following findings:

1. At the time of purchase, your vehicle was already outside of the New Vehicle Warranty and Motorplan parameters (5 years or 100 000km).
2. The vehicle is currently being attended to by a non-approved BMW repair centre.
3. The risk assessment inspection conducted by the dealership at the time of purchase does not include oil quality inspection.
4. We can confirm that your vehicle had a full service history done by BMW approved dealerships prior to your taking ownership of the vehicle.

I trust the above is in order and we assure you of our best attention at all times.

Kind Regards

BMW Group
Financial Services
Mr Mohammed Seedat
Joint Customer Interaction Centre (SF1-ZA-S-2)
Customer Services: Aftersales
1 Bavaria Avenue, Randjespark, 1685

I replied to the insensitivity of the response and the pathetic argument that they did not feel the need to check the oil. That is like a doctor not feeling the need to check your blood pressure!
And guess what? I got the same copy and pasted email back!!

So, the log book showed the last service was done almost 3 YEARS before the sale... on 76 000 kms... I got the vehicle almost 24 000 kms later and BMW do not think that it would be due diligence to service the vehicle.

So people, if you buy a Used Approved BMW, do yourself a favour, go get an AA check done on it too, as the BMW check seems to not be worth the paper it is written on.
This weekend BMW are having a big push on the radio regarding their Used Approved Vehicles and it just made me so angry. They are no better than any side street secondhand car dealer, but you pay a premium for the "peace of mind".

Again, I do not want to tarnish BMW dealerships that are doing a stellar job, but I do take issue with Fors****s and BMW South Africa for this brush off of a response.

Crashed my car and the insurance company chose to use this repair shop for my car. Not only did they take over 2 months to repair my vehicle, they asked me to collect the vehicle and when i was driving it home after being assured the specialists and foreman had test driven the car, i soon realized the had forgotten to put on the sleve for the shock making almost impossible to steer... they then asked me to drive it back in that condition and took another 3 weeks to repair. Not only have i had no feedback, follow up phone calls or email but recently took my car to BMW Auric for a small routine service and they made me aware of the panels being put on skew by the BMW Fors****s ARC, this is causing my doors to pop open, while driving and when parked and the plastic trimmings of the vehicle to continuesly pop out of place .

Dear BMW SA

I’m flabbergasted by the manner in which the repairs and return job on my car is being handled by the staff members at Fors**** ARC Parow (Body repairs work shop in parow). My 2014, 116 BMW went in for body repairs and came back with a faulty / defective boot lid, and cosmetic light scratches. When we took it in for the body repairs the boot had no faults. After the repairs I collected my vehicle and later noticed that it had more cosmetic scratches. I then went back to the body repair shop at my own expenses only to get the most poorest of services.

Eventually the consultant rebooked my car, to repair the bootlid and t fix the minor cosmetic scratches, after my BMW was there for an entire day, they called me claiming that it was fixed, however the following day the boot continued to be defective. I called and reported this matter to them and they promised to call me back in order to arrange for repairs but didn’t. What was even more disappointing was the fact that initially they were refusing to take responsibility for these defect, and the consultant still argued with me regarding these defects.

I therefore would like BMW to assist me urgently with this matter as Fors**** ARC Parow is your franchise or accredited partner, which should be professional at all times. I also want to state that if a car is sent for repairs the least they can do is clean the vehicle thoroughly after the repairs are carried out and completed to get rid of the paint smell and the dirt and dust that is on the exterior of the vehicle.

I feel Fors**** ARC Parow has transgressed against me as a customer, by entertaining such incompetency from their staff, and by failing to sort out this matter amicably, I also feel that they could have cleaned my car and properly fixed the boot lid when I reported this matter to them on the first time. I have been inconvenienced, and this experience has caused me unnecessary stress, and expenses. This experience has left a sour taste in my mouth as a result I’m starting to doubt the BMW Brand.

I trust that you will help resolve / correct this matter as soon as possible without any further delays.

Kind regards

Lumkile Ngqakayi

Took my Out of Factory warranty BMW to For****s Tygervally to get assest for a strange rattle i was getting.

A forman was called to assist me in identifying the rattle so that i could purchase the Parts for the repair. I advised him that i have dont lots of troubleshooting to Locate the fault, removing belts, etc etc etc but the noise Remained.

he did a quick look telling me its my DISA valve. When i told him i checked it and even Disconnected it and told him it not that, He insisted it is the Disa. I then told him the noise is in the bottom of the engine. his response," The DISA rattle noise Travels ...

He did not even ask me to book the car in so they can trace the Noise nothing.. he said i should start with replacing the DISA and walked away..

I left without buying parts and took it to a Family Friend ( Ex BMW Specialist ) .. he traced it for me and it was my Catalytic converters that have packed up.. That been replaced and the car is 100%

Poor Service, Poor Knowledge, poor decisions and Poor Judgment.. To advise a customer that he should throw parts at a problem in hope it is the fault

THEY FIX MY PROBLEM WITH THE CAR AND SENT ME INVOICE AND I PAY. THEY ALSO SEND ME REDICIOULOUS REDICULOUS QUOTE OND THE DOOR LEVER. I PAY FOR THE WORK DONE AND FETCH MY CAR. WHEN I GOT THERE I CANNOT GET MY DOOR OPEN OR GET INTO THE CAR AT ALL. THEY THEN LET ME GO WIT LIEZL HENDRICKS THE SALES LADY AS IT WAS VERY HOT OUTSIDE AND TOLD ME THAT THEY SHOULD GET INTO THE CAR FROM THE BOOT SIDE AS THE BOOT CAR OPEN. YOU KNOW WHEN I LEFT MY CAR WITH THEM MY DOORS WORKS PERFECTLY WITH THE REMOTE. I ASK LIEZL HOW DO YOU GET THE CAR IN AND OUT OF THE WORKSHOP ALL THE TIME WORKING ON IT AQND SHE TOLD ME IT WAS WORKING PERFECTLY. IT IS A FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND I WAS DROPPED OF THERE WITH A WORKS COLLEAGUE. REMEMBER I MUST JUST COLLECT MY CAR. AFTER 2 HOURS WAITING THEY TOLD ME THAT THE LOCK OF THE DOOR IS NOW BROKEN THAT THEY COULD MANAGE TO OPEN CAR BUT THE CAR CANNOT LOCK NOW. THAT THEY WILL GET ME QUOTE ON THE LOCK. WELL THIS WILL TAKE 10 WORKING DAYS AND THAT THEY HAVE TO GET IT FROM GERMANY AND THAT I HAVE TO FAX MY REGISTRATION PAPERS TO SHOW THAT I AM THE LEGAL OWNER. MY CAR IS MY ONLY TRANSPORT TO WORK AND IT IS A FRIDAY AFTERNOON. THIS WAS HECTIC A WHOLE WEEK END WITHOUT A CAR AND NOT KNOWING WHY THIS ALL HAPPENED AS EVERYTHING WAS WORKING PERFECTLY. I HAVE MY CAR PICK UP BY A GARAGE IN ****ARNEY GARDENS THE FOLLOWING MONDAY. IT HAS COST ME R6000. ALL THAT BMW TOLD ME THAT I CAN BE GLAD THAT THIS HAPPENS WITH THEM AS IT WAS ABOUT TO BREAK ANYWAY. THEN I COULD NOT GET OUT OF THE CAR!!! WHAT NONSENSE. THE PERSON THAT HAVE TAKEN OFF THE COVER TO GIVE THE QUOTE ON THE DOOR LEVER IS TOO BLAME AS HE IS THE ONE CAUSING THE CAR NOT TO OPEN. I THINK BMW SHOULD PAY THE COST FOR THE DAMAGE THEY HAVE CAUSED. I AM A PROUD OWNER OF BMW BUT AFTER THIS I HAVE SERIOUS DOUBTS.
