I took my 5yrs old for the sunset drive on Saturday the 18th Jan. 2025 and it was nothing short of magical! Our guide was Nolu (Noluthando) and she was very nice considering were the last tour for the day. The lady even offered to take pictures of us and I got to stan on my insta! We also got to view a surprise feeding! For the sunset drive I suggest you bring your own snack for the tour (restaurants are closed), drinks should be in closed container because ride is very bumpy. Also bring a trash bag to take your ******* with. Well done Nolu!

My family and I went for the 3 hour safari and it was spectacular! Thank you to our guide, Nolu. She went out of her way to make it special for us. I will definitely recommend Lion & Safari Park to everyone!

We are from America and visited the Lion & Safari Park on December 26, 2022 while vacationing in Johannesburg South Africa. We are also African American. We were so excited because this was our first time visiting South Africa and we were excited about the Safari. My excitement quickly turned to disaster and anger because of the racism I experienced from the Safari guide named Alex who was our driver for the Safari. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be subjected to such behavior. A photo of Alex is also listed on the Lion & Safari Park’s brochure as the Alex Tour (3hr). In the picture he is petting a lion. Listed below is a detailed statement of my horrible experience that I submitted to management. I pray no one of color ever has the experience I did that day. On Monday, December 26, 2022, my wife and I attended a 3-hour tour at the Lion and Safari Park. When we first arrived, a black South African lady named Princess I believe was supposed to be our driver but she was pulled for another detail. Then a black South African male was supposed to be our tour guide but he was pulled for a different detail. Finally, Alex was assigned as our tour guide. I thought this was strange that the first two tour guides were reassigned but did not say anything about it. My wife and I was just excited about the tour and looking forward to it. Besides my wife and I, there was one other married couple in the vehicle with us. They were an Indian couple and very nice and witnessed Alex’s unprofessional behavior. I have included them in a picture we all took together that day. As Alex started ramping up with his racist comments, the couple could tell I became agitated and witnessed my wife trying to calm me down. I will list below everything that Alex said because I took notes on my phone to compile my statement and complaint. Initially, we saw a family of lions sitting together by the trees. When Alex brought us to the lions he began to talk about one of the lions stating this lion likes to beat up his wife all the time and we call him Chris Brown. Chris Brown is a black famous R&B singer who beat up his then black girlfriend, R&B singer, Rihanna and went to jail for it. In my mind I’m thinking, why is he using black people to make racist jokes and I also thought it was very unprofessional. At this time, Alex was just warming up. The second racist commentary was when Alex said the lions like to fight each other all the time and that they were from the Benoni neighborhood in Johannesburg which is a real bad neighborhood. I may have misspelled the neighborhood name but at the time it sounded like he was saying Ba-nan-ee neighborhood. Regardless of the spelling, I knew he was comparing the lions to black South Africans in a negative way. After, he parked the vehicle for awhile because he was waiting on the feeder to come out and bring food for the lions to eat. Alex said the lions would come over to the tree when the feeder came along with the meat for the lions and the lions did come. There was a black South African male standing on the truck throwing out meat to the lions as they approached the feeder’s vehicle and then Alex said: “We gave him the ****ty job because he’s part of the labor union and he’s ****ed some people off.” By this time, I had grew very tired of Alex’s racist comments and I said, “What’s the matter with him being a part of the labor union. That’s a good thing, because they will ensure he’s treated humanely.” Alex then said, “Oh he’s paid enough already.” I then said, “You know, you think you’re very funny, but you’re not.” My comments were a result of all the racist comments he had made up until that point and I was angry that I had to be subjected to such racist comments and unprofessionalism as an American tourist visiting Johannesburg for the first time and what I thought was a great Safari resort. When I told Alex I didn’t appreciate his comments, my wife said, “David remain godly.” It is godly to speak out against racism and demand respect as a man and human being. I did not come all the way from America to be subjected to such treatment on what I thought was going to be a great safari tour. After these incidents took place, I was angry and just remained silent and took pictures and had very limited conversation. Earlier on, the Indian husband could see I was growing agitated with Alex’s racist comments and asked me if I was hungry and wanted to eat. He was trying to calm the situation. Alex’s comments did not stop there. Alex and a black male South African took the guard gates off the truck before we left the lions to continue the rest of the safari and then Alex made a comment and I knew he was trying to scare me but it did not work. He said, “Now we’re going to take the guard gates off the truck and go see some more lions to see how much courage you all have.” That was so unprofessional but I did not flinch at all, I remained silent because I knew God was with me regardless if he tried anything. His comments did keep me on guard because I did not trust him at all and I started going over scenarios in my head if he tried something out in the middle of the safari. As a customer, why should I even have to be concerned about what he may try to do. This is wrong in every imaginable way. As we continued on the Safari, Alex continued being unprofessional. My wife maintained dialogue with him throughout because she was trying to smooth out the situation and how I was feeling. During the safari, I had to help my wife up onto the vehicle and I was behind her ensuring she got back into the vehicle safely and Alex said: “You got a lot back there you need to protect.” Alex was referring to my wife’s back side and that was very offensive. Alex knew he had the upper hand because we were deep into the safari out in the middle of nowhere. The last comment he made was when I got off the truck to take a picture of the hyenas. I heard him say, “Hey David, are you going to take a picture of your mother-in-law.” He said it from a distance and I just acted like I did not hear him, but I heard him very clearly. As all of these events were unfolding, I was documenting them on Notes on my iPhone. I was so upset and angry. I never expected to be treated like this at all. When the tour was over, I told my wife I was going to report him to management. I began to ask ladies in customer service who was the manager and I told them a little bit about my experience with Alex. She told my wife that someone else had also complained about Alex earlier that day regarding a similar issue. Once I got to Marius Annandale’s office, the Operations Manager, I saw Marius and Alex was sitting right in the office too. It was almost as if he anticipated I was going to report him. I then began to tell Marius of my experience and he seemed very concerned and I also called out Alex in front of Marius and told him I did not appreciate his behavior at all. Alex said in front of Marius, “What’s wrong, what’s going on.” I then said you know exactly what I’m talking about and the racist comments you made earlier. “ I then said “you have a serious problem and I’m going to pray for you.” I also noticed on the back of Alex’s baseball cap it says: “Alex, the ***** Wrangler.” I told the Operations Manager that Alex’s hat is very unprofessional for someone to wear while at work. Alex’s hat is a bad representation of the Lion and Safari Park brand. I then went outside to speak with Marius a little more I asked Marius for the Corporate Office information but he gave me his card instead and asked me to send him an email of the incident. I never did because I wanted to enjoy the remainder of my trip and not allow Alex’s behavior to control the rest of my trip. I reported the incident to The Real South Africa, the agency who booked the tour for my wife and I. I will say, this incident really hurt me a lot. I did not come all the way from America to have an experience like this, especially on a safari trip that I had been so excited about taking before the incident occurred. I pray that Lion & Safari Park deals with this situation quickly, swiftly and in the right manner. I also hope no one of color ever has to experience what I experienced on that day. Lastly, I will be providing this information to other review sites.
