I found Elaine when I checked out reviews after a terrible experience with another lawyer. She got so much praise and thanks, I decided to give her a try. And now I am writing just such a review for her full of praise and thanks, as well. I wrote an email and asked for an appointment. The answer was fast and she expressed empathy for my case in that very first contact. I met her a couple of days later at her office and was impressed by her deep interest in my case and my fears and my wishes and, I felt, in me as a person. She has a very sharp mind, lots of wit and a lively personality. She also has the presence of an actress and I can easily imagine her in court fighting for her clients’ rights and protecting them from the opposition. Elaine makes a definite effort to keep the costs down even when it is not in her interest but only in mine. I needed her to nip an escalating, serious problem in the bud, which had been going on for years. She wrote a letter which brought the whole conflict to an abrupt stop by its impressive phrasing, its perfect knowledge of all legal aspects and the minute enumeration of all potential consequences arising from any further bother. I think we all know the terrible feeling when we are wronged but seem incapable of defending our rights. It definitely felt wonderful when Elaine informed me that the opposing party had given in the day after delivery of that official letter. They judged it more prudent not to have me go to court. So, as all these other clients, I am deeply grateful for Elaine’s efforts, her great commitment to my cause and her kind, reassuring ways. I warmly recommend her services to anyone in need of a lawyer. You could not be in better hands.
I employed Gary Bundy when the floor in my new conservatory had to be tiled. The porcelain tiles were 30 x 150, the area 38m². He had been recommended by my architect, who told me that this format is a bit tricky to lay it in the 1/3 offset tile pattern we wanted. The tiles look like oak and come in a number of different patterns. They have to be attentively distributed and matched to get that natural wood appearance. So, you need someone, who really cares to get it right and do the best job possible. Also, I needed the best possible waterproofing for a floor which will regularly be wet when the plants are watered. Gary advised what would be useful and what just a waste of money and I feel confident we agreed on the best solution. Gary turned out to be completely reliable, which is not at all something you can take for granted as I had to learn the hard way during the construction work. He was always on time, told me exactly when and for how long he would be absent from the site and finished within the predicted time frame. His people are clearly highly trained and skillful and did an excellent, perfect job. They worked in the same concentrated manner when Gary was present as when he was absent. The price for the job is certainly reasonable and competitive. I don’t think I would have been able to get it any better elsewhere. Gary was always polite, friendly and in a good mood, which I really appreciated as I had so much stress with other craftspeople. I also liked the respectful way in which he treated his workers. In my experience that is closely linked to how much effort these workers put into the job. It was a real pleasure having him work for me and I am planning to have the pool area tiled by him and his people. I can totally recommend Gary Bundy and have already done so to my friends. It deserves to spread the word when you discover one of those rare gems among craftspeople.
A delivery was announced this morning and at 9.18 I got a call that the courier is at the gate. I go to the gate, there is no one there. I call back and the guy tells me an address sharing a couple of letters with my real address. I rectify the address and ask when he will be here. Not at all, someone else will deliver in the afternoon. I would not bet on it. I go back and check the address on the order confirmation. It is correct and the sender has shipped another order last week to that same address. There is actually already another complaint about a Courier Guy delivery being investigated right now. On 22.1.2025 I was informed that my parcel could not be delivered around 12.00h because the courier claimed he had no access and that I did not respond to the call. But I was at home, the gate was open and there were many people on the building site that is happening at my house right now. I got two calls all day and none from The Courier Guy. The photo that the courier took and passed on as proof shows only the 30 cm of gate that is outside the wall when the gate is open. At a first glance it looks as if the gate is closed, so it was an intentional deceit. And there is more. In December 2024 there was another ‘failed attempt’ at delivery when I was at home all day and never got a call. That time the photo only showed the street number on the wall so that you could not see the construction people milling about. And then there was the situation a couple of months ago, when I was ****ing next to the gate all afternoon and a ‘failed delivery’ as reported to have happened at 16.50h. No one had approached that gate at that time. My question is: What do the delivery people gain from pretending to have attempted a delivery? Do they get paid extra for the attempt? Or do they pretend because they cannot deliver all the parcels they get for a specific day and don’t want to admit it? A courier from another service once told me that they have to pay for airtime herself and that is why some of her colleagues prefer not to phone a client and safe the money. When I confronted the guy with the failed attempt the next day and asked what number he has called, he gave me my number with one 0 changed to a 9. Sounds like a plausible excuse if it had not happened several times. If they do not deliver on the day it was supposed to happen, I have to stay at home another day and reorganize what I had planned. To sum it up: The Courier Guy claims to have twice noted a wrong address although the correct one was on the parcel. Their people claim to call the wrong number. And they pretend to have attempted deliveries which clearly did not happen. I will try to convince the senders to use some other courier service.
After an unbelievable letdown by the plumbing firm, I had used before, I googled and decided to try HWS Plumbing in Gordon’s Bay, going by their very excellent reviews. I called Heinrich Schütte at half past eight in the morning, telling him that water was dripping through the ceiling where the geyser was. He said he would organize with another client to come to my house first as this was an emergency. He would be there within 40 minutes, which is about the time it takes to get from Gordon’s Bay to Somerset West during high traffic hours. He told me at once how much his work would cost. He asked me to verify if my geyser was covered by insurance and to shut off my water supply if I had not already done so. And he was on my doorstep 40 minutes later. He went through the crawl space and found that my geyser had not ruptured but a valve was leaking and needed replacing. He called the shop at once, made sure they had the part and reserved it and ask for and let me know the price. At all times did he keep me informed of the costs I had to expect and asked my confirmation that it was ok with me. Then he left to get the replacement valve after having called the other client to get his consent again for the delay. I got the impression that the client did not mind. Heinrich was back very quickly, exchanged the valve and that was that. All done in record time. And then he took a bucket to the crawl space and carefully sponged up all the water that must have collected there over a couple of months before it finally found an outlet through the lights. Finally, he wiped the floor at the dripping area clean and dry. Of course, it was such a relief to have the cause of the leak detected and repaired within record time. But it was even more important that I had found that endangered species among craftsmen: A professional with lots of experience, highly competent, reliable, quick to respond and whose prices are as reasonable as it gets. I liked his polite, friendly way and I really appreciated his knowledgeable advice concerning insurance claims. He treated my problem as if it was his own. I am glad my geyser is repaired. I am so happy to know that the solution to any future plumbing jobs is just a phone call away.

I needed a new chlorinator and control panel. I went directly to the Leisure Pools store in 6B Dirkie Uys Rd in Somerset West. I was asked a couple of questions about my pool and then they recommended the model Quality Chlorinator Q15. I noted the price and the model and went home to research. It seemed indeed a good choice for my pool and the price was considerably better than from other sources. I called to confirm and got an appointment for the very next day. Leon and Siya arrived at the precise time indicated. How often does that happen? I said I was impressed by their punctuality and Leon said he was ‘Old school’ in that regard. He then took off the old device and installed the new chlorinator and the control panel. Everything was done in an obviously competent, experienced and amazingly quick manner which, of course, shows in the low labour costs on the invoice. Leon suggested to exchange the timer for a new model that would bridge load shedding. As I had not asked for that, he did not have it with him and told me he would come the next day. But in fact, barely 20 minutes after they had left, Leon called again to ask if he could come and install the timer at once. 5 minutes later he was here and 10 minutes after that I had a new timer in place. Everything has worked perfectly well since then. The creepy crawly is much more efficient than before, the pool is spotlessly clean even after one of the typical windy periods. Can’t praise these guys enough. Both Leon and Siya were extremely friendly and polite. I like to know as much as possible about the devices around my house and Leon encouraged me to ask and answered all my questions. In a nutshell: Totally reliable, competent, fast and all that at a very, very good price. Being such kind, friendly guys is a plus that I appreciate very much.
The tap deck in my kitchen needed replacing. My past experiences with two plumbing businesses have been appalling. One tried to charge 1000 R for imagined material. The other wanted to bill 4.5 h of labour while spending less than 2 hours including travel on that job. The first plumbing firm I contacted asked for more than three thousand Rand. I repeated that I already had the tap deck. That did not change the price. Then I called 24Seven. I was told two people would come the next day and that it would probably cost 690 Rand unless it would take more than an hour. I was surprised that I did not need to pay beforehand as usual. There were no additional costs for callout, for every kilometer travelled and the time to drive to my house was not billed as labor either as in other cases. As it turned out I actually paid 690 Rand for a job that was done to my total satisfaction. The two men did not mind that I insisted they consult the installation instruction. (The guys who installed my new oven some time ago damaged the frame because they did not know that model’s installation technique and were too macho to look into the manual.) Both JP and Simba from 24Seven were competent, efficient, friendly and respectful. It is such a relief to have found this excellent plumbing business. They are reliable and honest, well-trained, obliging and a pleasure to deal with. I can warmly recommend 24Seven and have done so already to my friends.
When I tried to buy my tickets for the Franschhoek Literary Festival 2023, I got stuck in the payment phase. After several frustrating attempts at paying, I gave up and sent an email to the Webtickets customer service. We all know what customer services can be like. Lousy phone connection, rattling down of stock phrases at unintelligible speed, impatient employees…the nightmare. Webtickets was the opposite. I got a quick reply, the connection was very clear and my service employee Ray was competent, understanding and supportive. She contacted me both via email and phone and I could reach her back immediately through both ways. When we seemed to have found the solution, she offered to call me back later to make sure it had worked out. This was the most agreeable encounter with a customer service department I have ever had. They are the last real human contacts that we have left in the automated online market. The quality of their service or lack thereof shows how much a business really cares about its customers. Webtickets obviously does.
I picked Donald out because his business DWC Tree felling and landscaping had lots of positive reviews. There was a high palm tree to be felled in my garden. He came, inspected the site and explained how the work would be done. I have had various garden services doing jobs on my property and even those who did good work, usually damaged plants in the process. Donald promised that would not happen. I finally added some other jobs and got a good price for the lot. The first thing that struck me, when his team arrived was that he clearly uses the best tools you can get. The equipment of the climber was amazing, too, which not only guarantees the safety of the man but also reduces the time it takes to cut down a palm and thus reduces the costs for the client. There wasn’t much space around the palm tree and a lot that could be damaged. I was totally impressed that even my small fig tree close to the palm did not have a single twig broken. Donald is not the kind of boss who is standing around giving orders. The most delicate job was taking out two huge Bougainvillea bushes which were surrounded by asparagus. I had grown them for two years and unless they were damaged, I would be able to harvest at last next season. Donald took over that job himself and to my surprise managed to take out both bushes without damaging any of my asparagus plants. Finally, his people packed everything on their truck and left the place nice and clean. I am totally happy with the work Donald and his team have done in my garden. He is a very responsible, competent person who seemed to care about my plants as if they were his own. I have come to understand that people who treat their employees well, insure better service for their clients. Donald and his men have that kind of relationship. I already have plans for more work to be done by Donald and his crew and can warmly recommend him.
The kitten had only been with me for a week when I discovered blood and slime in the litterbox one morning. Lizahn at TAH Sitari examined my cat in my presence. In the past, vets have disappeared with my animals to some other room with some vague explanation. I prefer to observe what is done and ask questions. I don’t get the vapors because some procedure is disagreeable for my animal. Lizahn asked many questions, examined my cat thoroughly and then went to check the substance in the ears. She told me that there were several possible causes and we would start by eliminating the most probable one. She had also found out that there was indeed a problem with the ears that should be treated. She followed up my cat’s treatment a week later, had checked the samples I had brought the first time and carefully explained the medication to me. Five days later everything was fine with my kitten. I much appreciate Dr. Lizahn von Zeuner and the TAH Sitari, which is in easy reach of Somerset West. This vet is competent, attentive, efficient and reliable. She is also warm-hearted, patient and understanding. You clearly feel that your pet is in very good hands. I dealt with two people at reception, both were very friendly and helpful. The costs are reasonable, which is a nice change from some of my other experiences with vets. There are two waiting areas which are intended for cats and dogs, so the close proximity of a dog will not add to the stress of a cat, which I find very circumspect. It seems that a candle is lit near the counter to draw attention to the fact when someone is morning the loss of their pet, I suppose because it had to be put down just. When that pet owner leaves, the candle is retrieved. Part of the space is occupied by a vast choice of pet food, toys and accessories. I highly recommend this vet and the practice. I think our precious animal friends are taken care of there in the most competent ways.
