NO REFUND_ I made a booking with David of Umdloti Letting on 19 May 2022. I paid for the booking on 20 May- on 21 May 2022- Natal experienced the second round of flooding. I called David on Tues- 24 May to enquire about electricity in Umdloti- he informed that the electricity was down in the area due to the flooding, I called again on Mon 30 May, and spoke to Inessa of Umdloti Letting who then informed me that the electricity was still down in the area. On Tues, 31 May, I spoke to David, the owner of Undloti Letting to request a refund for my booking. David informed me that he will NOT refund my money if the water is connected. David has no indication from the Municipality as to when water will be restored to Umdloti, I have booked from 15-19 June 2022- and I need to make alternate bookings. I am now OUT OF POCKET>

We booked at sugar beach 2b through umdloti lettings. Upon calling them on the 23rd in the morning we were then only notified that Umdloti had experienced power cuts from the 21st. Umdloti lettings failed to notify their guests that this had been a problem prior to arrival. We were a family of 8 including 3 kids under the age of 4. The letting agent did advise on the day of the 23rd that if power did not come back on before 5pm we would be refunded for that day. When we arrived at the flat the condition of flat was to say the least very unsatisfactory. It did not appear as the correct protocols had been actioned for COVID ie. Deep cleaning and proper sanitizing. If anything it smelled grubby and moldy. If a cleaning service was used then the flat would have smelled of cleaning detergent or something indicating a fresher smell. There was no electricity from the 23rd to the 26th, when it did come back on the 26th we were still left without power as the sugar beach complex still experienced issues. This went on until the 27th December with intermittent power cuts , on the 28th we decided enough was enough and headed back home. Throughout this experience Umdloti lettings have not managed this situation very well, whilst we know that the power cut in this area was out of their control we also experienced a host of other issues with the flat. The cleaning service did not appear to change the bed linen in all 3 rooms for arrival of new guests , it smelled of body odor and we felt like their were bed bugs in the rooms. None of us were able to sleep properly the first night. There was dirt under the beds, looked like it had not been swept in a while. I complained to David Downes the next day who assured me that the cleaning staff had changed it, he then sent someone over to change it, it was evident after this that the sheets were not changed when the last people left. The flat was also old and worn out, with the patio table outside left very dirty. The cleaners do not bother to clean thoroughly and literally are there to just sweep. We were told due to COVID cleaners won’t be coming to the flat, I had to arrange this with the booking agent to ensure we had cleaners come in at least three times due the holiday. There were no proper curtains in the main bedroom, which made it impossible for anyone to sleep in that room. No bathroom mats in the main bedroom as well. We were left with no option but to book elsewhere for a few days and when we got back on the 26th I called the emergency number to say we still did not have power. Half the flat was working but no appliances, no air conditioning , no plug points. We stayed another night with minimal amenities. David sent over a plumber who confirmed he could not do anything and it is the municipality who would need to fix it. The following day another plumber came over and fixed the issue with the flat in 5 minutes. Not to mention all of our perishables ie meat and veg were now spoiled.I escalated the issue of the air conditioning not working by calling the emergency number again , it appeared to be one of the owners who wAs extremely rude and ****y to me. David’s mother. She thought she was doing us a favor by lending us two fans and was really rude and condescending. My husband called the emergency no on the 27th and escalated the issue of the power cuts to sugar beach , David’s father attended to this call and was also extremely rude to my husband and was being abusive on the phone . He called after and apologize confirmed to my husband and said that he would refund us for the 27th. We checked out on the 28th as electricity was still an issue at the flat as this was becoming quite ridiculous and frustrating. We informed David and Umdloti lettings and he confirmed he will refund us for the 23rd, 28th and 29th as well. He also offered us a weekend at the same flat out of season. We would never go back to this flat with all the issues experienced, also now finding out from other reviews that the lift has not worked for months and the flat is so poorly Maintained and cleaned by Umdloti lettings. When trying to resolve the refund issue David was quite unprofessional and only allowed a refund for the 23, 28,29th and even though his father confirmed the 27th to my husband David refused to grant those nights. We were also told by the lady who made the booking at umdloti letting when we checked in on the 23rd that they will refund guests for every night lights did not come on by 5pm. This clearly was not the case. Umdloti lettings should close down as they are probably the worst letting agents in that area. Not only does their attitude stink, for a hospitality business their service standards are terrible. This is the 4th time we are experiencing issues with Umdloti lettings and will never use them again. Now that air bnb has quite a bit of flats in This area, and we have booked with them a few times best use Air BNB. David and his family think they are doing the guests a favor by offering poor minimal services with an attitude that is pathetic and basically robbing people of their money, people who have paid quite a large sum for a holiday which has turned out to be a nightmare.

We stayed in 17 Mount Green from 13 - 21 December 2020. The owner deceived us by taking our full payment and not fixing the only aircon in the bedrooms that he know did not work. Only working aircon was in the Living Room and 3 bedrooms were unusable. The place is run down, dirty with ****roaches all over at night. Sliding doors not opening or locking. Aircon outlet floods the outside deck, Bath with jets does not work and stinks due to trapped stale water. Towels were dirty and smelly. Kitchen cupboards pealing off. A horrible experience and we left a day early.

My family stayed at Sugar Beach (4A & 5A), which we let from Umdloti Letting, these were the issues: - Units in general and unacceptable state of disrepair; - Subpar cleanliness to downright filthy; - Basic amenities not provided; - Insufficient amenities; - Insufficient cleaning service; - Broken lifts. All of which was brought to Mr David Downs attention during our stay within a day of arriving, and instead of resolving anything at all, he dared us to find something else (yes right - at short notice for 7 people with 2 babies!?), and added that "we'd have to pay for the time we stayed". We had to spend the remainder of our time there; even attempted to resolve the issues after we left, but have had no resolution from these letting agents - of course they are done once they've taken your payment and happy to leave it at that. Worst of all, they hide behind their "terms and conditions" (Ts&Cs), which are only shared with you after you've paid a deposit, notwithstanding the fact that their Ts&Cs do NOT release them from the complaints herein listed. I have uploaded photos of the disrepair, but what was most upsetting was that even a bit of upkeep would have prevented our experience of things like peeling laminate in the bathrooms, broken sliding door handles, etc. Totally unacceptable for the price you are paying. The units were filthy! I have uploaded photos of the bed linens: when we arrived the linens had actual mold and yellowish sweat stains. I requested the cleaning lady (more on that further) to please change the sheets, which she did as I showed her the mold, but that was only after I had to spend a night sleeping in a dirty, moldy bed with my infant baby - it's downright wrong! The bath had a strange smear on it, and the kitchen drawers and floor were dirty. On arrival, both units had all of only ONE floor towel, ONE roll of toilet paper per bathroom, and one TINY bottle of cheap dish washing liquid. I've been to many self-catering places before, and never have I been met with such stingy cheapness - they provide camping ground provisions at an upper-class rental! – and these places were anything but cheap to let. They claim their units are fully stocked/furnished: both sleep up to 6 people, so in the kitchen, you'll find exactly - and ONLY - six of everything (mismatched and poor quality, also) - so you spend most of your time cleaning dishes (crockery and cutlery), because you'll need them the next time, then you quickly run out of their dish washing liquid. But wait, they don’t even give you a dish cloth or drying cloth – you are told to bring your own in the fine print! Also, they don’t provide bathroom towels, but that’s something you find out on arrival. This is almost expected when you’re renting (much) cheaper holiday accommodation, which this was not. The cleaning? I’ve skimmed through other reviews, and in reply to another complaint of the place being dirty, Mr Downs responded that they would address it with their cleaning lady. It’s exactly the same “PR babble” I was given, so this is clearly a recurring problem. Their Ts&Cs say cleaning is every second day, excl. weekends and public holidays. So for our rental, they clearly timed the cleaning lady to come on the Thursday, instead of the Wednesday and Friday, so that they could deliberately limit the services to us. One of the worst things we had to deal with was an utter breach of a pre-condition of our stay: working lifts, because my father is elderly and struggles to walk. The lifts were broken from the ground floor. We had to go through a whole routine to send the lift down to my father every time we returned to the parking garage. It wasted time, added stress, and my father had to stand around waiting, no doubt feeling like a burden. Prior to booking, it was absolutely stressed that we needed lifts (obviously in working condition) for this reason. Umdloti Letting’s reply: it is a recent malfunction and the building is awaiting a part from [wherever]. We spoke to an actual resident of Sugar Beach who told us the problem has existed for months. That to me, is the definition of unethical, dishonest business practices. I hope the owners of these units read this review and remove Umdloti Letting as their agents. Otherwise, I hope you use other means to book the lovely accommodation available in this part of South Africa.
