I took my car in for a service and the actual work seemed fine. A few days later, I realized my service book was missing from my cubbyhole. I contacted Tania, who confirmed they had it, great, mistakes happen. What’s not great is everything that followed. 5 days went by, and no news or confirmation on her returning it, so I followed up. I provided a very convenient drop-off address in Observatory (a quick drive), as I live all the way in Blouberg - and then the excuses started. Tania told me it would be delivered Monday. Monday came and went. Then Tuesday “after work.” Also didn’t happen, then Wednesday came - no service book. Now we’re at Thursday, and it’s just been a string of promises with zero follow-through and no proactive updates. I’ve been patient and polite this whole time, but it’s frustrating how quickly urgency disappears once they’ve been paid. Fixing a mistake they made seems to be treated as optional. I haven’t gone in myself out of principle — I shouldn’t have to rearrange my time to correct their error when the solution is literally a short drive. Really disappointing experience. I was planning on continuing to service both my cars here, but this has seriously changed my view. Customer care clearly ends at the till.

Worst experience EVER. We booked our Renault Stepway into Canterbury on Clare to assist with a timing chain that was faulty. We agreed to pay a deposit of R10500 before they would start on the car - full quote just over 18k It took them a week to order parts, then it took another week to do the work. After 2 weeks we were informed that the car was still not running, and that there was another issue with the car, and that they had to remove the engen again to see if they could find the issue. After 3 weeks the mechanic called us to inform us that there is a huge issue with the engen, and that it would never run again. They informed us that they could assist with replacing the engen. We asked them to stop all work on the car, so we could figure out what our next steps should be. The car was still under a finance agreement, and I immediately contacted Renault to go out and assess the car so we could try and trade it in for a new car. And this is where things get VERY interesting. Renault went out to look at the car, and informed the mechanic that they will be doing a full assessment on the car to assess the trade in value. Later the same afternoon, the mechanic called my husband and told him that he made a HUGE mistake. He inserted the timing chain incorrectly, and that was the reason why the engen was not working and made a terrible sound. The mechanic apologised and informed us that the car will be ready and driving by the next Monday. This felt like an elaborate ****, where they tried to milk us for as long as they could. Once Renault got involved, they realised that they will not be able to **** us, and backtracked on their first assessment. By now, I have lost all faith in Canterbury on Clare. I requested to pay half of the outstanding amount on the day of collection and the balance in a few days time, to give us enough time to get the car assessed by Renault, and for us to test the car. They were not accommodating at all. We paid a deposit in good faith, believe every story they told us. I am so absolutely dissapointed in the service, and how I was treated by Tanya the receptionist. She told me that they are not a credit service provider, and that I needed to pay the full outstanding amount before they will release the car. I assumed, that after the very bad customer experience that we had, that they would be more understanding, and try to salvage a bad situation. I was so very wrong. You will most definitely be ****med if you use Canterbury on Clares.

BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT GIVING THIS BUSINESS YOUR CAR I'm writing this review after a 3 month period of Canterbury having my car claiming to "fix it". Originally was quoted 16k for the full job by them, was told my car would be ready by the end of the week & then nothing - radio silence, no communication, nothing. Until about a week later when I recieve a call with a new quote with an additional R10,000 on it. This repeated itsself about 4 times, over a period of 3 months. They sent me a quote of R50,000 when they originally told me "No it wont be much more its fine" - This is after they had already done R30,000 worth of work on the car to fix the issue, leaving me no choice but to pay for the work that had already been done, if I had known the size of the job from the start, I would have never done it - i think they knew this too, hence only feeding me "bits" of the problems over months. And to top it all off - the reason I took the car in (smoking issue) was still NOT FIXED. I had to call & message multiple times a day just to get through to somebody - I was constantly told they will call me "Today" and never heard anything for days at a time. Very ***** business, they do not do their due diligiance for their customers - if they had done a proper evaluation from the start - they wouldn't have had to lead me on a wild goose chase over months. Honestly feel as if I've been taken advantage of, for sure the worst service I have ever recieved from any business. UPDATE: I have also taken my vehicle to a trusted and reputable mechanic who has confirmed that these people are absolute ****mers - they snapped my fuel rail in my engine & then tried to epoxy it together, resulting in constant fuel leakages - honestly lucky my vehicle did not catch fire - trying to charge me 10k not once but TWICE to remove my engine (all in 1 job mind you). DO NOT TAKE YOUR VEHICLE HERE. I feel sick to my stomach after what this business has done to me financially.

I am very happy with the service I received from Alistar and Tania. When I say service, I don't only mean work on my car. Tania is on-it like white on rice. We had a slight misunderstanding and miscommunication, but other than that I can definitely recommend them and I was very happy with the work they did on my car. Thanks!

I feel like I've found a diamond in a yard sale. Alistair from Canterbury on Clare (in Gardens 8001) has been a godsend to my family and my friend's vehicles. The more we see him work his magic, the more we refer him to others. For someone who doesn't know all that much about cars, I have always felt sceptical and mistrusting of mechanics who seem to have built up a - perhaps unfair? - reputation of pulling the wool over people's eyes. Alister is a rare find. He is down to earth, takes the time to explain anything should you wish to understand it and always works with integrity. I feel most lucky to have found him!
