On 16 December 2024, my family visited the Essence cafe and grill to celebrate my daughter's birthday, we really enjoyed our eats, everything was superb. Problem started upon requested the bill. The bill had a total of R990.00, when I asked the waitress how did she came up with this total, she said R90 is a tip, since we ordered for R900.00 therefore a 10% tip is charged. She kept on explaining that if your is R800.00 and above, the 10% tip applies. We were so disappointed 😥, because nowhere within the rastourant was a sign to alert the customers regarding a 10% tip how does it apply.

We went there for breakfast and the place was empty. We order a Forrester breakfast and Steak omelet. The food took 30min to arrive. The Forrester breakfast was delicious and the omelet was very cold. We called for the waiter and we're ignored on the first attempt and after requesting service a second time the waitress that did arrive was unfriendly, didn't offer any apology or explanation for the very cold food and was just overall borderline rude. We asked for the bill to leave and a different waitress arrived and she too was unfriendly. Overall the food was okay and were it not ice cold it might have been excellent. However, the staff were unpleasant and ruined the experience

I absolutely adore this restaurant. I went there last year on V day and had a blast. It's my hangout spot when in Kzn Pmb they offer the best buffet service and have the most excellent dining experience. I am looking forward to come again today for another beautiful experience.

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction and disappointment in your establishment. I ordered a chicken burger on Sunday afternoon (15/01/2023) and I specifically said to the waiter that I do not consume pork or beef as I am a Hindu. I was served a beef burger and I am very upset by this.

We booked the place for a table of 16 people only to get there and see that the tables were not set and worse still dirty. The waitress did tidy up however we wanted to set up the place for the event. The cutlery was not ready- i mean not ready at all, they were still washing and drying the items which we waited 20+ minutes for. The manager was rude when we asked why this was not ready. We managed to set up how we want however when booking we was told we would have 2 waitresses at our disposal due to the number of people however this was not done and one waitress assisted which she even got the orders wrong. The food was delayed for a long while. I would really not recommend this place for more than 5 people.

Very disappointed with Essence Cafe, ordered a Thai Beef Salad, it arrived with only the greens, NO BEEF, they forgot to add the beef. When I called to enquire, they stated there was NO way they could assist me. I’m so frustrated!!!! How is this even possible, they didn’t even suggest how they could compensate me. Don’t think il be ordering there again! Disappointing

Good day I would like to request the contact details of the owner to report another case of unhygiene at Essence in Pietermaritzburg. I would also like them to be liable for any medical costs if there is any case if food poisoning for the person who had a horrific experience of a huge fly in her coffee as she was unaware of it until I pointed it out, it is so upsetting because this has occurred before and I asked politely without laying a formal complaint. We eat here frequently and did ask them to address the issue. A waitress named Bongile was extremely rude and found the situation funny. The manager in charge (on 29 Jan 2022) said she was pregnant which I assume makes that okay? I am a female and I do not use pregnancy to be incompetent at my job. The manager was also shocked that there was a fly which means that the waitor did not even inform her of the issue. The manager also stated that the coffee is from the machine hence there shouldn't be a fly. I would like to suggest to higher management or the owner to please ensure the audits and and health and safety checks are done appropriately especially in the current Corona virus pandemic. We also were ignored and served last which also once again occurred before. Previously the service and racism was not as bad and I will ensure this is addressed because this is unacceptable.
