GAP Cover Refusing Claims After Emergency Hospital Admission – Extremely Disappointing Complaint: I am extremely unhappy with the service and claim outcomes from my GAP cover provider. I was hospitalised due to severe iron deficiency and was admitted directly from the emergency room. The treating doctor confirmed that the iron deficiency had to be caused by internal blood loss and proceeded with the necessary medical investigation while I was admitted. A gastroscopy was performed in hospital. While the procedure showed severe inflammation and changes in the stomach lining, the exact cause of the blood loss could not be identified. I was then treated with an iron infusion during my hospital stay. Now, my GAP cover has declined the claims on the basis of a 12-month waiting period for scopes. While I understand that the scope itself may fall under a waiting period, what is completely unacceptable is that they have also declined: The anaesthetist shortfall Specialist visits during hospitalisation Treatment related to my condition (including the iron infusion) Their reasoning is that all of this is linked to the scope, which is unreasonable. I was admitted as an emergency case, and the treatment I received was medically necessary. To make matters worse, they also declined a previous claim for my daughter’s emergency admission, stating that it was not between 18:00 and 06:00 — despite the fact that she was admitted directly from the ER on the same day. This raises serious concerns: What is the purpose of GAP cover if emergency admissions and necessary in-hospital treatments are not covered? How can an admission from ER not qualify as an emergency based purely on the time of day? I am now left with significant out-of-pocket expenses during an already financially difficult time. This experience has been extremely frustrating and disappointing, and I expected far better support from a GAP cover provider in a genuine medical emergency.

All I got were emails asking for more information from the hospital and medical aid. Five weeks later told that the hospital must claim from the medical aid. Right or wrong I received no guidance or feeling that they were there to help. I am giving up having received nothing.

We’ve been with Turnberry Gap Cover for quite a few years now. They’ve always been amazing, paying very promptly! They obviously only pay what your medical aid doesn’t cover for in-hospital only. The last few years my Wife and I have been hospitalised often, and they’ve never rejected a claim. They’ve paid more than my medical aid has paid, at a fraction of the cost!

I was introduced by our broker Wynsam to Turnberry GAP cover last year November 2023 and filled the form that was sent back to them on the 10 January 2024. In their email I was requested to complete the application to join the Group Gap Cover in January 2024, which I did. My child was admitted in hospital on the 22 January 2024 and there were costs which were not covered, and it happened that I missed the time to lodge the claim with them because of my working space which I did explain to them. Last week wednesday after receiving rejection letter for the claim I made an appeal explaining the reason why the submission was late, and it was accepted and given approval for payment. To my surprise yesterday I received an email to give them a call urgently which I did and that's when it was explained to me that the insurance only became effective from the 1 February 2024 therefore, they won't be able to pay. I have been paying on a monthly basis without skipping even a single month but now when it's time for my claim to be processed I get feedback which I am not happy with at all. My question is the time when the rejection was issued why they didn't explain that? It feels like it was never their intention to pay for my claim. If on my side the application was done on time who 's fault is it that they application was processed late.

I have this cover for almost a year now. They have paid all of of my shortfalls.owing to this i will not cancel the policy. However I have just experienced something about them that you should know. Firstly read the fine print carefully. There are things that medical aids do not cover completely. Be weary as turnberry also doesn't cover what your medical Aid doesn't as well. I was admitted to hospital as i have sickle stem anaemia. i was not concerned about medical aid or shortfalls as i have turnberry gap cover. My doctor charged above scheme rates. Thinking gap cover would cover it i continued my treatment. Now i regret going into hospital as the bills are piling and turnberry might reject them as they have done now. There are still other bills to come and im now weary whether it will be settled. Read their terms and conditions with a 'fine tooth comb' as it is vague and you could be mislead. i only hope that they cover the bills yet to come, I'm now wondering if getting treatment was worth it. i am extremely disappointed and hope my future claims are not rejected.
