Went for breakfast. Egg completely overcooked. Chips raw and tasted 3 weeks old. Bacon unchewable. Toast looked like someone took a bite out of it. Ugh.. hope there baked goods are somewhat better . Disappointing .

Service was good and food was ok but we also wanted some nice German Pretzels so we ordered 6 medium size ones for 10h the next day. They go for R13 a piece. The next day they were actually ready for collection and what I got was anything but. I received 6 soft sloppy slappy 1cm diameter dough sticks curled-up into a strange **** shape, 90 x 85mm. look at it: https://imgur.com/a/PmnNtNW Even the old traditional German quality now seems to go down the drain.

I have been going to Der Zucker Backer for many, many years and I was looking so forward to going there today again. What a total disappointment, From the Decor, to the atmosphere, to the quality of the food we ordered. I don't eat a lot, so I wanted the chicken strips & chips off the kiddies menu, only to be told that it has an age restriction of 12 years and younger. I have never had an issue like this elsewhere. I was then told to order the half portion of chicken & chips from the other section, as it is priced according to Adults. (I was not concerned about the price, I was concerned about the size of the plate actually). The strips were quite tough and the chips looked shrivelled up and old, totally unappetizing. My husband's prego roll was tough to eat too. We hardly touched our plates and asked for doggy bags. I did take my plate to the Manager, and he said they would make me new chips, to which I said it was not necessary, I was no longer hungry. We were charged full price. We were going to buy the divine custard/almond and chocolate mousse cakes to take home, but after this experience, we decided to go home empty handed rather, and I doubt that we will ever go there again in future. Very sad day for me. :-(

Oh such bad service. Waited at least 40 minutes for our food which was an open sandwich. The chips were oily, cold and undercooked. The crust of the bread was so hard that even my husband had trouble cutting his. It bent my fork it was so hard. It was impossible for me to cut it, so I had to separate the crust from the bread and eat it by hand. The edge of the rye bread was also burned and then covered with basil pesto. So so slow. I had to take my bill and credit card in my hand and walk to the exit before someone assisted us to pay it. The waitress apologised for the delay as they were so busy (she wasn't our waitron, but very nice) but the restaurant was half empty, so pity the customers when its full. Their bill shows the amount of a 10% tip and 12% tip as a guide. Zero tip is the appropriate tip for such terrible service. I've seen them as I've driven past and always wanted to eat there. Nice menu but terrible food and service.

Unfortunately der Zucker Backer has deteriorated at an alarming rate to such an extent that their baked goods, food in general and customer service has resulted in an inevitable bad experience for anyone who knew this landmark in Pretoria. After spending a lot of money on several goods, it was a shock to have to throw away every single item. It was frankly disgusting and inedible. As ling time customers of der Zucker Backer, we were understandably shocked and angry because we couldn’t serve these atrocities to our guests and we contacted them to relay our dissatisfaction. To our surprise, we were told to return these goods. In other words, we had to retrieve these things from the trash, which is unacceptable and atrocious. You cannot insinuate that someone is lying and expect to retain good customer relations. We were fobbed off instead of reimbursed as would be the proper way of apology. We will never set foot in der Zucker Backer again and loosing frequent patrons is incredibly short sighted.

After I've ordered a cake 3 weeks before a 50th birthday and they said it's fine for the order, they phoned me 5 days before the birthday and tells me they can't bake the cake anymore. So unprofessional!!!!

Poor quality food No cheese or onions for the cheese and onion burger, but they don't tell you, only when you ask, they say they did not order enough Milkshake in a wine glass as the milkshake glasses are all used Chicken in the chicken salad is so overcooked and fatty Allowing people to smoke in the area outside that is supposedly smoke free!!! Unacceptable, but the waiter did his best to assist and I received 5% discount but just too many mistakes The menu's are old and just peeling apart. I think a good place for cakes and not anything else to eat
