Our Mum was admitted to Busamed Gateway Hospital in Umhlanga. She has been admitted to ICU2 and is very ill. The service from the nurses is really disgusting. My Mum couldn't breathe and all the nurses said is that the medication should kick in and went back to use her cellphone. Most of the nurses in ICU were busy on their cellphones and had no interest in the patients. Surely the management should have some standards. The whole reason for employing these nurses are to look after the patients - and if they are not interested in looking after the patients - they should be replaced. Further to this, being a hospital, the nurses don't seem to be very hygienic. They attend to different patients without sanitizing their hands, etc. Straws are given by nurses to patients and left on wet unhygienic tables. Management needs to put in stricter rules for the nurses. It actually seemed like we entered a government hospital. Very disappointing service!!!

If I could give no stars, I would. My father in law was admitted to the hospital, and we continuously phoned to try and get information about his condition and asked if the doctor could please phone us, as we live 400km away. Eventually, we drove down to Durban to see how he was doing. The staff were very unfriendly and despite my husband giving them his number and requesting that one of the doctors (at least 4 different doctors charged for visits) phone him, we never received any phone call. Every time we phoned, we were told his vitals are stable. The only phone call we received from the hospital was at 21h00 one night to tell us my father in law had died and the nurse demanded that we immediately arrange for the body to be removed. How callous is that? I would NOT recommend this hospital to anyone.

My first experience was initially a good one with my mom being admitted to have a port put in her chest, after surgery she was really unwell but went into D ward where we experienced lovely friendly staff. The second evening i was called at 12pm to let me know my mom was being moved to ICU due to a Pneumomediastinum aka air bubble trapped under her lung and between her chest wall. Thereafter she was moved down to High Care ward B 3rd floor where the service has been HORRIFIC! The nurses are terribly rude, unhelpful, always on their phones. And dont Answer their main phone when calling in to check in. The one nurse politely told my mom to bath herself which lead to my mom crying in the bathroom for an hour with no help. My mom calls the nurses to please help her to the bathroom and no one comes or she is made to wait which lead to her messing herself and then having to wash and sort herself out... and this is HIGH CARE! i am beyond furious!! My mom weighs a mere 36kg and has a serious lung condition MAC and has had surgery for a port to receive critical antibiotics and this is what she has to go through in what is supposed to be an amazing hospital. I feel sick leaving her there. Further to this review given, she was then left WET AND STILL FULL OF SOAP in bed after i insisted they bed bath her the night before as she was too weak to get up and a towel was thrown on the bed after and said "Dry Yourself!!" Like ***.... i feel like im writing a horror book. These nurses shouldn't be there they are worse than the disease my mom has unfortunately got 😔 how can you allow your nursing staff to treat patients/people like this... i honestly have no words. I wont let this go and will have this nurse fired! I have spoken to the head sister, but i want to know what the outcome is of this disgusting nurse who thinks its ok to treat people this way.. why is she even a nurse?? She has thankfully been moved back down to another ward where i am hoping they will take care of her.. if not "i Will take this to Carte Blanche" i will not allow this individual to get away with this!

Would rate it negative stars if that was an option. Abhorrent and disgusting service. My seventy year old mother was admitted for a back op, can hardly walk, DR Coleman's rooms needed us there at 6am and forced us to wait in reception until midday and wheeled her into theatre in the clothes she arrived in, with her bags on her bed. Nurses never washed their hands - ever, played on their phones all day, picked their noses, no communication whatsoever. It's honestly repulsive behaviour. Plus you can never get hold of anyone. nd this is what you pay ridiculous amounts of money for? They should be in jail.

My wife's experience at Gateway Hospital was terrible; * Poor Management ( Ward, Care Manager and reception) * Incompetence staff at Ward 4 name Case Manager who gives incorrect details to medical aid * Lack of commitment of nurses, case manager and management as a whole * Poor communication all round * Casualty is highly questionable *

My dad was admitted on Saturday 05th. At 3.30am I was called and informed he had a heart attack. I have tried countless times to reach the cardiologist (Dr. Lutchman) and hospital manager (Shannon) - 8 calls today and 5 x emails today and still no one has bothered to call me back or give me any information. Every day I have visited I have asked reception and nursing staff to get the manager or cardiologist to call me. I’ve called the cardiologist’s office (Dr. Lutchman) too and left messages, each time been assured he will call me, but days later and still no word whatsoever. And this is supposed to be one of the best hospitals? Pathetic and completely unacceptable.
